About the Project:
Mission Moshi is part of an ongoing effort to serve the people of Moshi, Tanzania and ultimately, spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. From late May or early June to Late July (seven weeks), we will work with other students primarily from Lipscomb and Texas A&M.
Our main goal is to operate two or three English learning programs for 5th and 6th grade Tanzanian children. This program is designed to help children develop better English verbal communication skills and introduce them to various Old Testament Bible stories.
Also, we will serve the community through various service projects. In previous years this has included work at the Moshi Orphanage, at the Moshi Church of Christ, care for the homeless and one-on-one Bible and English instruction.
Our supervisor once we arrive will be Ken Bolden, a 20-year veteran of mission work in Africa. Ken is a graduate of Sunset School of preaching, Abilene Christian University, and Wheaton Graduate School. He worked on Lake Victoria among the Luo Tribe from 1978-1983. Since then, he has worked in and out of Nairobi, Kenya with evangelism, church planting, leadership training, mentoring, and Bible School instruction.

Daily Schedule:
08:00 Breakfast
09:00 Session One
12:00 Lunch
02:00 Session Two
06:00 Dinner ~ As the school proceeds, you will be invited into the children's homes to meet their parents and to eat; it is perfectly safe. You may also choose to do nightly bible studies with your "African friends" who want to learn more about the Bible or English.
PM Group Devo

Weekends: We will have the option to take day trips to waterfalls, game parks, other cities and nearby tourist attractions -- or just relax around Moshi.

Fund raising: We will begin writing letters very soon. Most churches make out their budgets in December and January. Making opportunities to meet with elders or missions committees is a great way to gain support, especially at your home congregation. Also, get radical about saving money for this trip. Many churches, friends and family will be happy to support you but it is important that you invest in it as well. There is a book that I have called Churches of Christ in the United States. It is a great resource that I will share with you. Each person will have an account at the Christian Center to have money sent to. The donations are tax deductible and the Christian Center will send a receipt if your sponsors request one.

Health:
Malaria is our first concern. Malaria is spread by mosquito bites. The anopheles mosquito comes out after 10PM and is generally gone by 4AM. Since these are sleeping hours, we will sleep under mosquito nets provided by the Hostel. We will also be taking anti-malaria medication (Larium). It must be purchased before you leave. It is a weekly pill that tastes terrible.J Last year, the price was $95.00. If anyone gets malaria, there is good medication in Moshi that is very cheap to buy. This is a common illness over there and the missionaries know exactly how to treat it. If you get malaria, you will never be able to give blood. More than 60 students have went on this mission trip before and no one has gotten malaria yet.

Vaccinations: Here is the list that I have. Double check with you doctor to see if it is current. Some of these are required, others are only recommended:
Typhoid Cholera
MMR Yellow Fever **you should receive a yellow card certificate.
Polio Hepatitis A and B (both are in a series)
Tetanus

The water is not suitable to drink or even brush your teeth with. The missionaries will boil it for us. If you have a water purifier that you trust, bring it with you. They are about $70.00+ if you want to buy one. Sometimes it is more convenient but not necessary.

Medical Care in Moshi is available and good: There is a teaching hospital (KCMC) at Moshi that has good, clean facilities and competent doctors.

Should there be an emergency, we will get blood from your teammates, and the many missionaries from other groups in the area. We will have a list of everyone's blood type before we leave.

You might want to check with your health insurance to find out their policies for international travel. They might require an extra fee for the coverage while you are gone. If they do, it will probably be worth the investment.

If someone needs serious medical attention, you will be flown to Nairobi, Kenya. It is about a 90min flight. There they have the best medicine in East Africa with many American and European doctors.

I don't say these things to scare anyone. Of course, we don't expect anyone to get hurt or sick. I just want you to know that we will be prepared if anything comes up.

Safety: Moshi is a small town of less than 150,00 people. Everyone in the town will know who we are, why we are there, and what we represent within a few days. It is a safe city to live in but we will have to be careful. Foreigners are always easy prey for con men and thieves. There is some fighting in East Africa but that is hundreds of miles from Moshi. Our names will be registered with the Tanzanian US embassy and we will leave the country if there is any doubt about our safety. Tanzania is a republic like the United States. They have religious freedom even more than we do in some cases!

Documents: There are three documents that you will need to enter Tanzania. One is your Yellow card (see Vaccines above) and the others are your passport and visa. You can get a passport application at the Post Office and your passport photo at Wallgreens. You must get your passport before you can send off for your visa. They each take several weeks to process.

Lodging and meals
: Except on weekends, we will be staying in grass huts with various people from the church. They will provide breakfast and dinner - usally bugs, eggs, tree roots and rice with some sort of meat. This is very different from American food, but it is healthy and tastes fine. Just Kidding J We will be staying at the Umoja Lutheran Hostel in the middle of town. It is clean and the staff is very friendly. Breakfast will be served at the hostel and will consist of juice, bread with butter and jam, eggs and fruit. Lunch will be eaten at various restaurants or shops in town. Dinner will be at the church or at the missionaries homes.
